Almost every inflatable paddle board uses the same valve, a Halkey-Roberts, and almost nothing else you own connects to it.

That is what a valve adapter fixes. It turns the board valve into a fitting your car compressor, foot pump or electric pump hose can actually attach to.

The reason to buy a set rather than a single fitting is that valve standards on inflatables are not standard at all. A kayak, an air bed and a board rarely share one.

Pump hoses split at the crimp, usually in year two, and a lot of people replace the whole pump because of it.

This is the adapter to keep in the car permanently. It costs less than a coffee and it makes every tyre inflator in the country a backup pump.

Get the valve pin position right before inserting. In the closed position the board holds air while you connect.

Electric pump nozzles snap where the hose meets the fitting, and pump makers rarely sell the part separately.

Measure before ordering. Zero point five five inches on the hose side is the common size, but not universal.

Once fitted, do not tighten past finger tight plus a quarter turn. The O-ring does the sealing, not the thread.

Best for: A pump that leaks at the connection no matter what you try

Almost every mystery leak on an electric pump is the gasket, and gaskets are sold in one thickness by everyone else.

Having 3, 5 and 6 mm in the box means you can fit the seal to the depth of your particular valve seat.

Start with the thinnest and work up. The right one seals with light pressure rather than needing force.

Compressors and pumps have different output sizes, which is why an adapter that works with one often will not seat on the other.

The manufacturer is honest about the method. Hand pump to a few PSI, then let the compressor do the slow high pressure work.

Loose adapter nozzles get lost, and the one you lose is always the one your friend's kayak needs.

Best for: A board that slowly loses pressure overnight

A board that is soft in the morning usually has a valve body that has worked loose, not a puncture.

The valve unscrews from the inside plate, and without this tool there is no way to tighten it without damaging the housing.

Check whether your valve has six or eight grooves before ordering, because the wrong wrench simply slips. Keep it with the repair kit that came with your board.

How to choose a SUP valve adapter

Work out which job you need done: Converting the board valve so a compressor fits is a different product from replacing a broken nozzle on an electric pump hose. The converters sit on the board valve, the hose nozzles thread onto your pump. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake here.

Measure your hose before buying a nozzle: The common SUP standard is 0.8 in on the valve side and 0.55 in on the hose side, but pump makers deviate. Two minutes with a ruler saves a return.

Insist on metal at the threads: The thread is what strips, and it strips fastest on an adapter that has been warmed by a running compressor. Alloy or metal inserts cost a dollar or two more and remove the failure.

Buy the gaskets, not just the fitting: Most leaks that people blame on a pump are a flattened O-ring in the adapter. Sets that include spare gaskets in more than one thickness are worth the extra few dollars for that reason alone.

Understand what a Schrader adapter does and does not do: It lets any tyre pump attach, which is genuinely useful, but a small inflator moves very little air at high pressure. Frequently asked questions

Can I inflate a paddle board with a car tyre compressor?

Yes, with a Schrader adapter, but slowly. Most car inflators are built for 35 PSI at low volume and will take a long time to push a board to 15 PSI. Pump by hand to 4 PSI first and let the compressor finish the job.

Why does air escape when I remove the adapter?

Because the valve pin is in the open position. Press and turn the central pin so it stays up, which seals the board, then remove the adapter. If air still escapes, the valve body itself is loose.

Which valve do paddle boards use?

Almost all of them use a Halkey-Roberts valve, sometimes called an HR or H3 valve. That is why one adapter type fits nearly every board, and why the same fittings work on inflatable kayaks and dinghies.

Do I need a valve wrench?

Only if your board loses pressure overnight without a visible puncture. That is nearly always a valve body that has worked loose, and a wrench is the only safe way to tighten it. It is a nine dollar tool worth owning before you need it.
