How to choose a paddle board motor

Decide between assistance and propulsion: A fin motor with 8 to 10 kg of thrust cancels wind and current so your paddling works again. A trolling motor at 30 lb moves the board without you paddling at all. They are different purchases and the second one needs a boat-sized battery.

Check the fin box before anything else: Most powered fins fit a US fin box, which is standard on hard boards and common on better inflatables. Cheap inflatables often use a proprietary slide-in fin, and an adapter may not exist. Look at your board first.

Watt hours, not vague runtime claims: Divide the battery capacity in watt hours by the motor power in watts and you have the runtime at full throttle. A 291 Wh battery on a 350 W motor is under an hour flat out, which matches the published figure. Anything above 100 Wh cannot fly.

Frequently asked questions

How fast will a motor push a paddle board?

Realistically four to six miles an hour, which is a fast walking pace and roughly double a comfortable paddling speed. Manufacturer top speeds assume flat water, a light rider and a fresh battery. Against a headwind, expect a motor to hold your normal paddling speed rather than exceed it.

Do I still need to paddle?

With an assistance fin, yes, and that is the point. With a full kit like the Y03 or a trolling motor you can cruise without paddling, though you should still carry the paddle. A flat battery a mile offshore is a paddle home, not a rescue call.

Can I fly with a paddle board motor battery?
